Ok, I found the tool for me. KWrite it is. I fiddled around with the word wrap

setting, the font, and the window size, then exited and restarted the program

and everything is just as I left it. Eat that, wordpad. I've stuck with stupid

frickin windows paradigms for far longer than I should have.

Now to vastly improve what this program has so tentatively offered that made me

so happy, yet still has so much underused potential...
